Low cost airlines EasyJet and Jet2 are starting new flights to Paphos for this summer season. Starting April 14th, EasyJet will begin flights to Paphos from Bristol 4 times a week and to Paphos from Edinburgh 2 times a week. EasyJet already has several flights from Paphos, but they fly to Manchester, Stansted and Gatwick.
New flights of Jet2 will be introduced beginning of May with weekly journeys to Paphos from East Midlands and Newcastle.
The new summer cheap flights were announced in London by the Chairman of Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Alecos Orountiotis who had earlier held talks with UK tour operators and airlines to help boost tourism in Cyprus. Orountiotis said that Cyprus is not a cheap destination, but with the help of CTO and other tourism professionals, they are improving the services that they offer to tourists.
According to Jet2 airline, they willl carry 82,400 passengers to Cyprus in 2010 compared to 37,000 in 2009, while Easyjet will be able to carry 225,000 passengers in 2010 compared to 155,000 in 2009.
Additionally, German cheap airline Condor has its flights scheduled between Paphos and Munch and Frankfurt from April until October.
Cyprus Statistical Service released optimistic figures, showing the first signs of recovery in Cyprus' tourism and cheap flights will help the main sector of Cyprus economy , which suffered due to the global recession, to get back on track. Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides pledged that tourist arrivals to Cyprus on march 2010 has grown by 14.8% in comparison to the last year.
