Larnaca Airport profileLarnaca airport is situated about 5 km south of the City of Larnaca in Cyprus. Nearly 2.5 million people use it each year, mainly travelling to Larnaca, Nicosia, Ayia-Napa and Limassol. Larnaca airport handles 800 flights each month is the largest airport in Cyprus. Larnaca Airport is often used as a hub by passengers travelling between Europe and the Middle East. Airport facilities:A tourist information office as well as various airline information desks; three banks; post office. There is a cafe in the public concourse and a bar and restaurant in Departures. Duty-free shop, gift shop, a bookshop and a news-stand. First aid room, a VIP lounge and a parents' and baby room. A business centre is available in the Cyprus Airways lounge, in Departures. The airport is equipped with adapted toilets, lifts, wheelchairs and ambulifts, as well as dedicated car parking spaces for disabled travellers. Larnaca Airport offers 500 short-term parking spaces as well as long-term parking with 24-hour security. Car hire companies found in the Arrivals: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt and Thrifty. Cyprus Airports upgrade:Hermes Airports Limited took over the construction, development and operation of Larnaca and Paphos airports in May 2006. Because of the significant growth in traffic in recent years, major reconstruction of the Larnaca Airport is in progress. Hermes Airports is to build new passenger terminals and extend the runways at both airports under a 25-year concession. First phase is due for completion on 2008 and it will serve 7.5 million passengers a year. The arrivals hall was expanded in February 2006 by adding two luggage belts, bringing the total up to six, as well as an addition of a smoking area and a larger lounge. Temporary measures, such as expanding of the arrivals hall, adding two luggage belts and addition of smoking area have been already done in 2006 to enable the airport to handle passengers until the new terminal will be ready. The second phase is scheduled for completion for 2013. New expanded terminal will be able to handle up to 9 million travellers a year.
